1978, Brandenburg: Fred and Jonas (both 10 years old) spend their sheltered childhoods together in the east of a divided Germany. Life becomes suddenly complicated for the two best friends when it becomes known that Jonas’ mother has applied for an exit visa to the West. They realise they will soon be seperated.
They therefore hatch out a plan tunnel their way through the Brandenburg sand, vertically through the earth’s crusts, all the way to Australia where they can meet again. Possessed by this dream they put themselves to work digging, racing against the ticking clock.
