Orphaned Krabat goes to work as a miller's boy in a sinister, mysterious mill. There the twelve miller's boys are not only taught their craft but the black art as well. Every New Year's Eve one of them must die, granting the Master another year to live. When Krabat's friend and protector becomes the next victim, Krabat resolves to fight the dark powers to the end.
